When we try to solve the problem of colonialism from the viewpoint of modernity, we are apt to arrive at a vague and even contrary consequence. Because this misses the fact that colonialism is one of the fundamental parts of modernism. Especially under the rule of Japanese imperialism, the modern mission that makes human autonomy deteriorate to savageness in the name of the progress of civilization constitutes colonialism itself. Therefore, if we study our past with the object of modernization, we will get to have a conspiracy sense in the world dominated by the power of logic. In this vein, to clean up colonialism we should introspect modernity itself fundamentally and make human dignity the base of thoughts.
In this thesis I analyze Nae-sun-il-che from the viewpoint of post-colonialism in that it is so characteristic of colonial logic. It shows us the ideological characteristic as false consciousness because it was propagandized even though it could not afford to practice itself and did not have the real intention, and it made colonial intellectuals believe a hypocritical promise sincerely. Like this, it functioned as the logic to conceal imperialistic violence for Japanese imperialists and it gave pro-Japanese the logic to deny themselves. The brutal injurers causing misery, and the rotten collaborators imputing their slavishness subjection to fate both of them showed the perfect type of colonialism. Therefore to escape from colonialism that may continue to exert a vicious influence on our society, we should reveal and criticize the logical foundation of Nae-sun-il-che.
