Danjae Shin Chaeho was the most radical nationalist among writers Park Eunsik, Yu Wonpyo, Lee Injik, Ahn Gukseon, Lee Haejo and so on in the early modern age of Korea. Alongside of Jang Jiyeon and Park Eunsik, Shin Chaeho endlessly published his patriotic and postcolonial articles through the press. In 1910, he left for China. Imperialist Japan colonized the Korean peninsula with the compulsive treaty of annexation between the two countries on August 29th 1910. Shin’s postcolonial or patriotic independence movement was more active and stronger than anyone else’s in the early modern age of Korea. He was exceedingly critical of traitors to our country as the chief editor of Hwangseongsinmun and Deahanmaeilsinbo. In 1907, Maruyama, an adviser to police affairs in Japanese Residency-General labelled Danjae as “an able writer.” Danjae became the head of the postcolonial movement through newspaper and magazine. Above of all, he insisted the importance of cutting one’s hair, repaying the Korean government debt to Japan, and using the Korean national language. He did not hesitate to criticize pro-Japanese groups, Iljinhoi, Kuminsinbo, Daehansinmun and so on. Danjae was a symbol of intellectual resistance to Japan in the early modern age of Korea. He brought national enlightenment to the people through an old form of Korean verse, and wanted to establish an independent nation through the translation of patriotic biography and the writing of literary works.
Danjae took his own way, different from Jang Jiyeon and Park Eunsik, who were new Confucian scholars at that time. And other writers, like Lee Injik, Lee Haejo, and Ahn Gukseon, who wrote in the new style of fiction, were easily assimilated by Japanese Imperialism. Together with Park Eunsik, Danjae constantly resisted the Japanese and strictly adhered to Korea’s national identity and prompted an independence movement. His literary activity was variable : translation of biography, patriotic articles, national narratives, poetry and novels. Now, we need to have a new discussion about his literature and estimate its value. In this research, I demonstrate that Danjae wrote articles on literary reformation above all, and that he translated an patriotic biography and so on. The patriotic intellectuals expanded more actively the postcolonial movement overseas in the 1910’s. After his exile to Russia, Danjae published Kwoneupsinmun at Vladivostok and began a movement for patriotic enlightenment and the defense of national sovereignty. Later, he went to China, traced several historical regions and constantly wrote about Korean ancient history. He exerted himself to cultivate a national identity and tried to construct Korea as an ultimately independent state.
