Chang S?ng-?p(1843-1897), one of the most versatile and prolific painters of the late Chos?n Dynasty(1392-1910), displayed his talent in figure painting with many works of Buddhist and Daoist subject and narrative illustrations.
Chang S?ng-?p's extant narrative figure paintings which illustrate famous literary works and historical figures reveal his distinctive painting style and the cultural, social situation of the time. Chang seems to have had a particular interest in depicting various anecdotes about Wang Xizhi(303-379), Tao Qian(365-427), and Ni Zan(1301-1374), which informs that eremitic ideas of those reclusive literary figures were highly appreciated by his patrons who were ruled out from high officialdom when the world of the late Chos?n was experiencing institutional and cultural disintegration.
Chang began his career as a painter by studying and copying the works by earlier Chos?n masters and Chinese paintings which he had chances to see in his patrons' collections and through printed painting manuals published in Shanghai. Some of his early surviving paintings clearly indicate his debt to earlier models in the depiction of figures and landscape background. However, he soon developed his own individual manner of figure painting with the unique composition, unrestricted brushwork, bold use of ink and wash, and the depiction of facial expressions and poses, which effectively described the contents of literary works and conveyed special characters and emotions of the famous historial and literary figures.
In this article thirteen of Chang S?ng-?p's extant narrative figure paintings are discussed in detail to trace the stylistic development of his figure painting and to examine his artistic achievement and the significance of his art, which enhanced his reputation as a prominent figure painter during his own life time.
