The bureau of Official Interpretaters(B.O.I.) was the foreign language institute of Chos?n Dynasty, and textbooks for learning foreign languages were used B.O.I. at that time.
This paper is a basic study on the Chinese textbooks of the B.O.I. in Chos?n Dynasty. This is an attempt at philological studies through textual criticism on Chinese textbooks, which carries a unique significance in the historical study of Korean, that is by means of taking into consideration a variety of factors such as original texts, authors, year of editing, comparison with different versions, and proof-reading of the texts.
All the textbooks of B.O.I. are studied in connection with their mutual relationships and changes they undertaken. In the early period primary school textbooks obtained from China. After the creation of Hunminjongum, their translation into Korean was attempted. After the Japanese and Manchurian Invasions, the textbooks of the early period were replaced by those translation in the B.O.I., which translated or transcribed the foreign languages by means of new Korean letters. They were used after having been revised, reedited and supplemented. A glossary translated in Korean was also compiled to be used as a dictionary.
