The author discussed paleoenvironmental changes of Yong-nup, so-called high moor, at the Dae-Am San located near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) at 38°N of Korean peninsula. Yongnup (dragon moor in English) at Mt. Dae-Am has been reported to be the only high moor (raised bog) in Korean peninsula. The ¹⁴C age of the bottom sediment (75~80㎝ in depth) at this site is about 1900 yr BP. Since the radiocarbon ages for the peat of 50~55㎝ and 75~80㎝ were almost the same as 1890±80 yr BP (NUTA-5364) and 1850±90 yr BP (NUTA¬5462), respectively, the author conclude that the deeper layers from 55 to 80㎝ in the high moor were the original forest soil.
Lower contents of organic carbon(C) and nitrogen(N) in the deeper peat layers rather than the upper layers support this inference. The peat of 50~55㎝ layer consists of sandy material with very low organic content, suggesting erosion from the surrounding area. The surface layer (0~5㎝) was measured as 190 yr BP (NUTA-5365) and the middle layer (30~ 35㎝) was 870 yr BP (NUTA-5288). The bulk sedimentation rate of peat was estimated to be about 0.4㎜ yr?¹ for the 0~ 30㎝ interval. The δ¹³C value of organic carbon in the peat fluctuated with depths.
The profile of δ¹³C may indicate that Yong-nup of Mt. Dae-Am have experienced the dry-wet and cool-warm period cycles during the development of the high moor. The δ¹³C profile of peat sedimentation at Yongnup at Mt. Dae-Am may be explained by climatic changes which occurred during the Little Ice Age (AD 1580~ 1700) and Medieval Warm Period (AD 700~ 1200).
