Ugang Yang Ki Tak was born in Pyongyang in April 2, 1871. He moved to Seoul to study English at The Widespread Relief House (Jejungwon) and developed a sense of judgment. He published A Korean English Dictionary with J. S. Gail and The Korean Daily News (Daehan Maeil Shinho) with Ernest T. Bethell so that he spread out the Korean independence movement. He was a patriot dedicated himself to the Korean independence movement from the publishing The Korean Daily News to his death. He also promoted the Repay the National Debt Movement (Gukchae Bosang Undong) with Seo Sang Don in 1907 and was wrongly accused and imprisoned. In spite of this, he performed an active independence movement by training independence army at home and abroad.
Because he tried to establish a provisional government “The Korean Republic (Koreoguk)” with An Chang Ho in Manchuria in 1917, he was arrested and exiled to Geogum Island. He also tried to establish “The Great Union Republic (Daedongminguk)” under the pretense of the opening ceremony of “The Korean Society for Ancient History Studies (Chosun Godaesa Yeonguhoe)” with his colleagues. But the plan was not successful due to Japanese forced suppression. In addition, he organized and advised independent organizations such as “Euseongdan”, “Dahantongeubu”, “Jeongeubu”, “Goreyohyukmyungdang”, and “Chosunhyukmyungjahuwonhoe” in Manchuria in the 1920s.
He moved to China in the 1930s and joined the Shanghai Provisional Government and contributed to raise its status. In particular, he served as state minister in the interim government in Shanghai, Hangzou, Jinjang, and Nanjing to unite Koreans and played a great role in establishing the legitimacy of the government in the wake of assassination attempts by Lee Bong Chang and Yun Bong Gil.
He organized the Korean Revolutionary Party (Chosunhyukmyungdang) and played a role in uniting Koreans. However, he retired to Godanggam (located in Yulryang in Jiangsu Province) and devoted entirely to practicing zen. He passed away at the age of sixty eight in June 21, 1938.
Accordingly, he devoted his lifetime to the Korean independence movement at home and abroad. With a firm belief and integrity he emphasized Korea’s prosperity and independence in spite of Japanese oppression. The Korean government conferred posthumous the Order of Merit for National Foundation on him in 1962. His body was buried at the Provisional Government Section in Seoul National Memorial Board in May 1998.
