Madagascar, the fourth largest island in the world, is located in the Indian Ocean off the southeast coast of Africa. It is commonly believed that the island was uninhabited until Indonesians began to settle there several hundred years ago. Although Madagascar is typically seen by the world as part of Africa, the Malagasy see themselves as separate from Africa and many take pride in their Asian origins. Their language - Malagasy - belongs to the Malaya-Polynesian family of Asian languages and is linguistically unrelated to any African languages. A visit to Antananarivo, the capital of this island nation and the home of the Merina people, instantly reveals that the physical features of many of the people are clearly Southeast Asian. Deeper examinations of the culture and the plastic arts confirm that the heritage of Southeast Asia may be found in contemporary Malagasy culture.
One of the most famous Malagasy writers both inside and outside of Madagascar is Charlotte-Arrisoa Rafenomanjato. Rafenomanjato writes novels, plays, short stories, poems, translations, and essays, mostly in French, the other language of the country. Her first novel, Le Petale Ecarlate (The Scarlet Petal), was a best seller. A number of her plays, mostly unpublished, have been produced. Two of her plays have received awards from Radio France Internationale. Certain of her works have been translated into Italian and English. Born in 1936, she is the former president of the Societe des ecrivains de la region de I'Ocean Indien, the writers' association for the Indian Ocean region. For this special edition of Asian Women, Ms Rafenomanjato agreed to an exclusive interview during which she talks about her life, her writings, and her views about women, among other topics.
