The Scarlet Petal (1985), a Malagasy novel by Charlotte Rafenomanjato, and The Scarlet Letter (1850), an American novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne, have some similarities about the destiny of man on earth. The novels are about the fate of two women, who due to the transgression of a law within a society regulated by religious beliefs, become embedded into a kind of invisible net where they are trapped and isolated from society, and where they also undergo the intolerance and cruelty of society. Despite their bad experiences, Hester Prynne and Felana, the two heroines, succeed in freeing themselves from this net, and deviate their so￢called "bad destiny". In order to show the worth of the two protagonists who fight against their inevitable destiny and the pressure of society, the two authors identify them with actual historical figures, who were admired for their conviction and courage. These women were Ann Hutchinson, who defied the male Puritan authority in the seventeenth century in New England, and the Malagasy Queen Rambolamasoandro who succeeded in confronting her powerful polygamous husband.
