The purpose of this study is to criticize the current situation of dance education in Korea that the dance education is only a part of physical education and to debate the direction of enhancement and improvement for the future art education in Korean schools by analyzing and generalizing the past studies about art education, because nowadays the Korean art education faces a new challenging goal that the art education should be a requirement to cultivate a competent person in global and information-oriented society. To reach this goal, I could find the following conclusions by analyzing the past studies and scientific journals which are recognized and given the ISSN(International Standard Serial Number) from KRF(Korean Research Foundation) in 2008. I also placed limit upon 165 articles among them and investigated the trend of art education studies by calculating the frequency and percentage of the titles, subjects, methods, and objectives of those articles:
First, the studies for the Korean school dance education were published 57 articles in KDES(Korea Dance Education Society)(34.3%), 30 articles in KAHPERD(Korean Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation,and Dance) (18.1%), and 22 articles in Korean Society of Dance(13.3%).
Secondly, the objectives of the studies consisted of students(61 articles, 37.0%) and teachers(24articles, 14.5%).
Thirdly, the methods of the studies were made up literature study (58 articles, 35.2%), research study(46 articles, 27.9%), qualitative research(35articles, 21.2%)
Fourthly, the subjects of the studies composed dance professors-learning (77 articles, 44.2%), the procedure of dance education(61articles, 37.0%), etc(24 articles, 12.1%), and dance teacher(11 articles, 6.7%).
Even if there are lots of difficulties in situation that dance education is not independent to other physical education, I think that the future of school dance education in Korea is hopeful as long as the increase of studies and the needs for the dance education persist.
