Unless they are focusing on the reproductive system, most doctors have a tendency to treat patients as though they were all the same sex : male. They consider patients’s stories of their illnesses, examine their bodies, and interpret their laboratory tests as though gender were irrelevant. But in fact, information we’ve been gathering over the past ten years tells us that this is true that the two sexes are startlingly and unexpectedly different and there are significant variations in the normal function of virtually all the systems in the body.
Gender-specific medicine is the science how normal function and the experience of disease is influenced by the sex of the patient. The gender-specific approach to health care includes both men and women.
We are just beginning the science of gender-specific medicine, doctors will all be trained in the unique features of both men’s and women’s biology and in the ways sex modifies the signs and symptoms of illness, then treat men and women more accurately and more effectively.
