An intercalary month is a scientific production from the calendar, but the methodology of recognizing this in the folk society has been progressed by putting roots down deep in religion. And many branches of folk customs and discussions done in the intercalary month reveals the folk psychology of dealing with unusual time.
There are four types coexisting in pairs but which are mutually contradictory in intercalary month folk customs. These are ‘doing’, ‘not doing’ based on important everyday affairs, and ‘praying for good fortune’, ‘blocking misfortune’. Sometimes, certain things are actively done having no connection with the characteristics of that everyday affair, based on the recognition of ‘doing in the intercalary month since there is no trouble’ even in the type of not doing an important affair. It is found that the same affair is applied oppositely by doing it or not doing it from dividing auspicious events and misfortune contemporarily.
Complicated recognitions toward the intercalated month is originally being progressed based on the notion of fortune. Not only the recognition toward a transcendental being related to unusual time but also an astronomic feature as ‘the month with no lucky & unlucky’ rhat the intercalated month belongs to Mujungweol(month without a middle) based on the calendar is importantly applied in the formation of the fortune notion. The intercalated month fundamentally with no fortune being developed into a fortunate month and misfortunate month- for example, an original interpretation that the month becomes fortunate from having no misfortune and misfortunate from having no fortune, is found to be expressed as folk culture through discussion. Moreover, as the characteristics of ‘things to do’ depending on the recognition on ‘fortunate, misfortunate month’ are regulated, the meaning of ‘month’ is made by dividing ‘fortunate, misfortunate affairs’. New discussions and interpretations on the intercalated month are continuously produced.
Especially, complex recognitions on the intercalated month and the notion on fortune reveals an aspect closer to an ideological development rather than a time development. Although the trend of the era is shown to some level, concerned discussions are handed down and formed in layers as complicated branches of thoughts always coexist due to the original characteristics of the intercalated month.
