The essay explores the life and work of Robert Raikes, the father of Modern Sunday School Movement. Robert Raikes was born in Gloucester, England, in 1736. His father, Robert Raikes, Sr., was a owner of newspaper company. Robert inherited the publishing company after his father's death in 1757. He was active in charitable works by often visiting the prisons of Gloucester. His experience of encountering with abandoned children on streets of Gloucester gave a call to the work of establishing Sunday schools. He saw the education of Sunday schools as the best opportunity to improve children's life. The best available teachers were lay people. The school taught reading, writing, singing, and catechism. William Fox, a Baptist businessman, helped to spread the movement all over the England by establishing the Society for the Support and Encouragement of the Sunday school.
Raikes used the Gloucester Journal to publicize the Sunday schools. The character of many of the youngsters was transformed by the education on Sunday. Juvenile crime rate at that time was drastically decreased. later English churches started to establish Sunday schools in their church buildings. Above all, the Sunday school work of Raikes was a kind of charitable activities flown from his love of God and others. The Sunday School movement also contributed to English and American modem revivalism and generated idea of free basic education for all children. Finally the Sunday school movement became a major phenomenon in England, Continent of Europe, and America. Raikes' comment, "the world marches forth on the feet of little children" still echoes by offering precious insights into the importance of Sunday school to modem church.
