This is a comparative study on sasolsijo and renga, especially regarding the common foundation of the two genres and the values from the comparative investigation. In that sasolsijo and renga are “lengthened literary,” and they have similar aspects in terms of formation, development, and decline, they have the same foundation. As lengthened literary, sasolsijo and renga were originally formed by the upper class, and extended to the lower class, which led to great prevalence, but not subjective development in modern times.
This study begins the comparison of the description principles such as literary of one individual and many, and openness and closeness. While sasolsijo is literary of individuals with openness, renga is literary of many with closeness. Then comes the metrical characteristics, which include the comparison of the positive aspects of existing styles and attempts to break away from them. Compared to sasolsijo, which features attempts to grow out of existing genres, renga maintains the existing formations. Lastly, the major class, patron, and performance as for creation and possession of them are examined. The major class of sasolsijo and renga started from the upper class and extended to the lower class, which is the common aspect of the two, but the upper and lower class in renga established different view points separately, while those of sasolsijo were not. The fact that the role of sponsors was outstanding was a common point, but it was confirmed that the extend and officiality of support were different. Besides, while both sasolsijo and renga were common in that they were created in banquets, there were differences in terms of sameness of the creator and possessor, singing and recitation.
