Winter Days is one of the most famous haikai-renga piece, which was written by Matsuo Basho and the poets from Nagoya in the seventeenth century. Haikai-renga should be written in the fixed number of sound units and be connected by the common verse. This literary form of the Edo period was applied to the animation program in 2003 by thirty-eight famous animators in Japan and other countries. The adaptation of animated haikai, supported by the Japanese government, created in an unprecedented style. The purpose of this study is to anaylize how the program, Winter Days constructs the mechanism for representing Japanese tradition.
This paper notes that both haikai-renga and animated program pursuit elegant artistry in common, but they are complementary by sharing its own character derived from its genre: haikai’s authenticity and animation’s popularity. This study also analyzes that the animated version creates allegoric structure by translating each verse to visual image, which is a link to Japanese tradition in itself. In addition, Haikai poets are shaped as historical figures in the program and this kinds of devices makes literature into historical tradition. Thus, Winter Days became a traditional Japanese symbol through the adaptation. The “past” can be recognized as “history” and “tradition” through the introduction of popular genre.
