This paper is focusing on political conflicts in Jo Seong-gi’s Changseongamuirok (倡善感義錄). Jo Seong-gi adopts historical facts and special elements of the late 17th century in great detail, and use them to obsessively describe political conflicts in his narrative. The political landscape of the late 17th century was dominated by ministers in power circle who committed immoral deeds for the sake of their own profit and political conflicts became ferocious.
The origin of the political problem can be traced back from the reigns of Jungjong(中宗) to Myeongjong(明宗). This fact is behind why Jo Seong-gi started his story at Myeong(明) Gajeong(嘉靖) period. Jo Seong-gi is considered to have sensitive awareness toward the political reality filled with immoral minister’s power and in lack of true communication.
The political structure represented in Changseongamuirok (倡善感義錄) seems to reconstruct the political field of Joseon(朝鮮). In the case of father’s generation, loyal ministers who were pushed out of the power circle of the absolute power system of Eomsung were unjustly sacrificed or became innocent victims. The king did not show any trace of consistent attitude. However, in case of son’s generation, moral figures gather to form the new political circle. Their political attitudes showed confidence in human relations and contributed to righteous execution of royal power under foundation of Udo(友道) and the duty(義理)of king and ruling elites(君臣). Jo Seong-gi desires of the morality of power and true communication as is represented in his Changseongamuirok (倡善感義錄).
What kind of political consciousness Joseon literati pursue in order to realize political culture they have dreamt of? My future project will answer to this question. Political consciousness can be found in novels of the late 17th century to the 19th century which enjoyed by the literati. We expect that to trace back the political consciousness of Joseon literati would be meaningful as the morality of power and the political culture of communication are in need.
