This paper reviews Memoirs of duke of Saint-Simon, who stayed for more than thirty years in Versailles, observed and experienced the court of Louis XIV. Saint-Simon, son of a duke and peer, planted his foot on the soil of Versailles in 1691 and started to write Memoirs from 1694 and continued it until the moment just before his death. His Memoirs is filled with stinging tongues toward Lous XIV and gloomy forebodings about a catastrophe. Why was he devoted to writing Memoirs for most of his life? This paper aims at tracing its motive and inquiring into the character of Memoirs of Saint-Simon.
First of all, it was not until Saint-Simon read Memoirs of Bassompierre that he decided to write Memoirs. Bassompierre agonized about power and human being in his Memoirs, because he rendered a distinguished military service but was put into a prison by involving in a political intrigue. Of course, this case was not limited to Saint-Simon but true of the nobility, and it is why writing Memoirs became popular in the nobility under the absolute monarchy, especially in the period of Louis XIV. But the fundamental cause in the case of Saint-Simon was his curiosity and persistance in hierarchy and rank, which have disturbed by Louis XⅣ.
Saint-Simon observed minutely the court society of Versailles and handed down the massive, detailed materials written in the critical perspective. His Memoirs has been suspected of its objectivity in historical aspect, although it has a good reputation in the history of literature. But recently historians paid attention to it in a different perspective and applied a new historical method to it.
