In this paper the creative activities of poet PARK Nam soo in North Korea, who later defected to South Korea, are explored. His inner world as a converted poet is looked into with his memoirs 『赤治六年의 北韓文壇』 (which means “North Korean literary scenes under the 6 year communists’ domination”) that was published directly after his defection. Park has published many a poem apparently glorifying the political system during his stay in North Korea. The 13 poems that have newly been discovered by the author are believed to be important materials for further research into Park’s activities in North Korea. Besides, the memoirs are expected to provide clues to how a literary convert tried to part from his previous period and find an entrance to a new world. With this paper a shift of Park’s understanding is intended from a poet of ‘purity’ and ‘birds’ to one who with his own person embodied the problems of the Korean modern history as well as its literature history. This suggestion comes out of the need that those works newly discovered compel his literature to be reevaluated and his life to be reconsidered.
