Recently, the Japanese film industry has come out of the long tunnel of recession and is bristling with activity to the point that the current boom has been called the 'renaissance of Japanese film.' Such development can be attributed to the fact that the internal structure of the movie industry in Japan has gone through a significant change, along with the changes in the environment of the industry itself in the midst of stagnation by the majors.
In the Japanese film industry, the changes in the systems for distribution and entertainment and the enhancement in value for the secondary usage of movies are being translated into the proliferation of film production, The movie production in Japan is being recognized as a business with robust prospect of recovering investment due to the rapid increase in the number of cinema complexes, rise in the movie-viewing public encouraged by service improvements by movie theaters, and enhancement of added value perspired by the secondary usage of films outside of movie theaters.
In light of such favorable environments for business in the film industry, more and more companies are making an investment in production of movies in Japan, In addition, as securing the investment for film production has become facilitated and ability to recoup the investment enhanced, a diverse range of production methods that are new to the industry, including presales, a guarantee for completion, and film funds, are being developed and establishing themselves as a norm.
These new changes in the environments for entertainment, distribution, and production in the Japanese film industry are closely related to each other and at the same time creating synergic effects that are forming an underlying force in the renaissance of Japanese film.
In this thesis, the author attempts to investigate the competitiveness of the Japanese film industry by summarizing the recent status of production and entertainment systems in the Japanese film industry, analyzing changes associated with them, and breaking down the circumstances within and without the industry such as the secondary usage of movies and expansion of the film industry as content.
