Film has the industrial cycle of production and distribution. It is important that not only who and what kind of movie is produced, but also how the film is delivered to viewer. However, the distribution of domestic film screenings in its infancy, especially before the production of Korean movie and their numbers has not been studied until now. Systematic and objective research on the Korean film history is still in barren ground.
From this circumstance, this paper started with the mind of comprehensively evaluating Korea film history. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the import, distribution, and screening of film by what way, which is the unexplored researching film in Korean film history. However, the documentation and film, which were screened and produced from the quickening period to independence in 1945, were not available. In addition, formal records on various policies and facility status are hard to find. Most of records are articles in newspapers and magazines, recollection and statement of movieman at that time. Nevertheless, it is not systematically filed and managed to compare and analyze. Fortunately, Mr. Lee, Seo Goo commented about this subject in Dong-A Ilbo from December 4 1929 to December 7, and it is used for the primary document for study.
The article by Lee, Seo Goo, "Up to screening of moving picture" was written at the times that public had a question about overall aspect of film, not just enjoying it, as the attention and popularity of film is increasing. This article was aimed for clarifying that how the film was imported, distributed, and screened. He humbly notified this article as 'simple story', but it contains valuable information about the distribution and screening status of 1920s' movie industry. The attention of public on film at 1929 can be found through this article.
Even though, there may be no activities and subject that can be exactly named as distributor at the infancy of Korean movie industry. However, this approach is for universal definition for distribution. Surely, there was distributing activity to connect supplier (film producer) to customer (theater). Since 1920s, the attention of public to movie was greatly intensified, and this would lead to the increased number of screened film. Therefore, the system as distribution was expected to be established. As shown in the article, change of needs and supply generate the different aspect of distribution. Even, distributor could be divided into 2 groups by the contract between supplier. In conclusion, there had been certain rules in its way for distribution until 1942, when Joseon Film Distributor was entitled to distribute by the order of Japanese Government-General of Joseon. This is thought to might influence on current distribution system.
