Statistical analysis of the 21st Century Japanese film industry box office performance provides the starting point for a topographic map. Since 2000, the number of total admission gross of Japanese film audience has grown, even for domestic (Japanese) films. In 2006 the market share for Japanese films outstripped foreign movies. The number of films with more than a billion yen gross increased, meaning hits in various genres. During this period, the gap between first and second in top box office narrowed and successes were not only limited to animation from STUDIO GHIBLI. This paper focuses on films based on popular comics. These films increased steadily as did other types of films with more than a billion yen gross. This trend explains Japanese film industry growth in quantitative expansion and also in quality of growth. The Japanese film industry should not overlook the Korean film industry’s trend toward making films based on comics.
