The objective of this essay is examine how social changes are reflected in film through the tendency of the 1980s' Korean film genres. The 1980s' Korean films started with the political tragedy called the Kwangju struggle for democratization in 1980. The national policy in the political suppressed period can be summarized as 3S(Sports, Sex, Screen) policy.
In the early 1980s, a lot of pornographic films released in the Korean film market because of the appeasement policy of the censorship system. Through a set of events, especially, the Seoul Asian Games in 1986, the struggle for democratization in 1987, the Seoul Olympic Games in 1988, and the overseas trip liberalization in 1989, Korea pursued the open-door policy. The influence was reflected in film genre.
To put it concretely, in 1980, many comedy and horror films were producted, but the films of the anti-Communism, the enlightenment, and the Saemaul(New Community) Movement were not so much. In 1981, pornographic films expressing the eroticism directly were the main stream in film production. because of the appeasement policy of the censorship system. In 1982, many films were focused on woman's body because of 3S policy. It made people get depoliticalized. In 1984, action films and adapted films were not made. Some self-conscious melodrama began to release. In 1985, the Korean film law was reformed two times. In 1986, coming to the Seoul Asian Games and the Seoul Olympic Games, pornographic films were changed into historical films such like 〈Eoudong〉, 〈Ppong〉, and 〈Byunkangsoi〉. In 1987, during the struggle for democratization teen movies were suddenly increased. Action and monster films were not producted. In 1988, pornographic films were overflowed because of the direct distribution by UIP. In 1989. many teen movies released. Some social realism film such like 〈Seoul Moojigae〉 appeared. In 1990, action films were so popular.
Therefore, Korean films in the 1980s can be the matrix of Renaissance to Korean film in the 1990s.
