Most of Jane Austen’s novels are the result of her efforts to grasp the meaning and reality of women’s life in early 19th century England. Austen concentrates on the process of marriage, in which she reveals women’s struggle to survive and preserve self-respect in the marriage market.
Emma is a unique heroine of Jane Austen’s novels. She does not want to marry only for her security, for she is assured of her gentility and has money enough to exercise power in Highbury society. Emma tries to experiment with and reconfirm her power by coupling Harriet with men of much higher positions through romantic love.
Later, however, Emma suspects that her societal position as a rich powerful single woman has been an illusionary one when Mrs. Elton replaces her in the society, because she is a woman of correct societal position, a married one. Both the probability of Jane’s marrying Knightley and Harriet’s confession of loving Knightley finally make Emma open her eyes and realize her own desire to marry Knightley. Emma’s desire to marry Knightley is related to her assurance of getting certain powers and being the leading lady in Highbury society again.
Emma’s marriage to Knightley isn’t meant as a surrender of her will to the male power of patriarchal society. Austen emphasizes Knightley has changed his critical attitude towards Emma. He now regrets his own stubborn arguments, and appreciates Emma’s views. There will be a chance for Emma, with her changed husband, to continue to exercise power, though a little reformed, and preserve her own identity.
