The ideal of feminine behavior in 19th century Great Britain can best be described as that of 'Proper Lady' or the 'Angel.' While the male dominated society of this era dictated these expectations, Jane Austen used real insight to approach her female characters and portray them honestly as people attempting to overcome difficulties from within their social positions.
While it is unknown if Austen was conscious of Britain's world role as an imperial colonizer, it is said that she in her novels demonstrated the reality of everyday like in how British colonialism effected an atmosphere of wealth and safety. She, however, as shown in her novels, barely recognized colonialism as the resource for supporting the domesticity. By this reason, Jane Austen's novels, specially Mansfield Park has been named to the 'domestic novel' and 'Imperial novel.' Many feminist critics have exploited the element present of irony in her works by describing her portrayal of 19th century life as criticism of Imperialism and extreme ethnocentrism, which were threats to their third world readers.
As the position of the third world readers to interpret English texts, the issue of boundary between 'subject' and 'the other' can be still remained. Even so, the great difficulties Jane Austen and Mary W. Shelley faced as women writers of this era allowed them to go beyond their expected roles as Proper Ladies. The female characters in their novels also had the obsession of unavoidable requirement as Proper Ladies. Therefore, if criticism of imperialist policies were their intent, overt discussion was not possible. The power of their pens lay solely in their abilities to reflect the voice of society and the role of modern women, and not to expand beyond the limitation 19th century Britain impressed upon them.
