Contemporary society has brought forth the model of a cyber university where education occurs anytime and anywhere within a new educational environment. This study considers the current state and the challenges of a Korean cyber university.
A cyber university is a new form of an educational institution that uses the Internet as its primary mode of instruction. Our example was founded in South Korea as part of the adult education system and came into being in November 1997. Fifteen universities within a four-year system and two universities within a two-year system came into existence after the foundation of cyber universities in March 2001. There are two universities which have Japanese departments and 4 universities which have a department related to Japanese studies, according to the education and statistics annual reports (2007). The minimum requirement necessary for graduation is 140 units. Thus the university can grant a bachelor's degree equal to regular 4-year universities in liberal arts subjects. Individual majors and their basic requirements for graduation may differ slightly.
The main priority and educational target for subjects related to Japanese Studies that the South Korean University under the Council of Education describes, promotes individuals who set out to gain knowledge of Japanese language, Japanese culture, and general knowledge concerning Japan. The second aim is to cultivate human resources who possess specific professional skills related to Japanese language, culture, and society. Over seventy percent of such learners form the studentbody of the cyber university, which places special emphasis on practicality as reflected in a relevant and versatile degree. However, the challenges posed by the management of the learners, especially when learners themselves evaluate their study progress, needs to be addressed as well. The advantage of learner autonomy online versus attendance issues may influence effective self-management. Freedom from the constraints of place and time and the opportunity to advance at one's own pace need to be weighed in light of access and online attendance issues. Thus, it is crucial to investigate and monitor learners' interactions with peers as well as professors. The promotion of knowledge and the common goal of the advancement of learning can be confirmed by the learner but they are ultimately reflected through official recognition in the documented form a widely recognized certificate.
