In spring an summer of 2007 field researches were carried out in two areas of Buriat inhabitation: in Aginskiy Buriat autonomous region and in Ust'-Ordynskiy region. 800 respondents were questioned in Aginskiy region and 552 ones in Ust'-Ordynskiy region. Main characteristics of questions were: national identity, sex, age. Main purpose of the research was comparison of ethnic-cultural characteristics of the two sub-ethnic groups of Buriats that lived to the east and to the west of Baikal Lake. Buriat of Ust'-Orda (west Buriat) mainly are shamanists. Buriat of Aginskiy region (east Buriat) are Buddhists. Results of the research demonstrate that Buriat of Aginskiy region in more degree than those of Ust'-Orda have preserved and are developing their language, in more extent are religious, kindred relationship for them is more important. They are more closed for external influence. Buriat of Ust'-Ordynskiy region, having been exposed to Russian influence for a long time, are losing ethnic-cultural components. At that, exactly religious system of shamanism runs through social system, reproducing kin relations, impedes destruction of the "body" of identity of Buriat of Ust'-Ordynskiy region by processes of modernization. For Buriat of Aginskiy region adoption of market relations in pastoral life does not contradict preservation of traditional way of life, even on the contrary it favors to its' development.
