Regions along the border region can be developed as special economic zones that accommodate so called Peace City and Peace Industrial District, and international organizations. In addition, regions along the border region have potentials for large-scale agricultural complex, water resource development and tourism post linking inland and marine resources, and natural ecosystems for a World Peace Park.
This study has two objectives. The first objective is to examine the potentials and spatial structure of the border region as a means for the peace and trade promotion between North and South Korea. The second objective is to select specific regions and functions that can be developed for peace and cooperative projects.
Major contents of the study are divided into three parts. The first part is a theoretical approach of development and utilization of the boder region. The second part is the analysis of the conditions and potentials of the boder region for trade promotion between North and South Korea. The third part is related to the selection of regions for peace and cooperative trade. The selection of regions is based on the comprehensive assessment, with emphases on infrastructure, status on regional hierarchies, and socio-political circumstances. The regions that were chosen are Jangdan, Cholwon and Hyunnae along the DMZ. The last part is the directions of utilization of selected regions, depending on the location of each region.
A realistic strategy for the use of the proposed functions and areas is step-by-step approach with a higher priority on already opened areas, will be followed gradual expansion to other regions.
