Mortuary practice in Korea is dominated by Confucianism while that in Japan is conducted according Buddhist rites. Confucian mortuary practice is a symbolical continuation of reburial practices (複葬) which originated in Southeast Asia and southern China. At the same time, Buddhist mortuary practice is a variation of that of Confucianism. For this reason, mortuary practice in Korea and Japan undoubtedly share a common structure and are essentially similar. Their common features can be pointed out as follows. First, the dead are the ancestors who protect the descendants after completion of purification of their soul. Second, although mortuary rites are performed with high frequency immediately after death, it is getting lower as time goes on. Third, mortuary rites are not performed during the whole life of the descendants but are completed at the end of the mourning period.
At the same time the following differences can be pointed out. First, funerary rites (喪禮) the purpose of which is purification of the soul, correspond to the first burial, while ancestor-memorial ceremonies (祭禮) designed for ancestor worship corresponds to the second burial. However, memorial service for the dead (追善供養) does not correspond to them completely due to the differences between Confucian and Buddhist doctrine. As mentioned, Confucian mortuary practice is a direct symbolical development from reburial practices. Buddhist mortuary practice is evolved from that of Confucianism by means of expediency justifying with the notion "Antarabhava" which means "the intermediate state" between the death and the next birth. And second, in Confucianism the end of the mourning period is defined by the generation criterion while in Buddhism the end of the mourning period is dependent on the number of years after death.
