Obayashi Taryo was a leading ethnologist who studied the formation of Japanese culture from an Pan-Asian point of view after WWII. He worked in the same line as the prewar school of scholars like Torii Ryuzo, who had studied on Japanese Culture who took set migration from the Korean peninsula in ancient times onward as their premise for research. He was also one researcher who had been able to recognize the difference between ‘migration’ and ‘cultural diffusion’ as a formation opportunity in Japanese culture. The paradigm of a homeogenous nation was reigning over the Japanese academic world from the 1970 "s to 1980 "s, the time when Obayashi was immersed in comparative studies on myths of Japan and Korea. Meanwhile the theory which insists on immigrants from ancient Korea was taken on by researchers who studied about the formation of the Japanese race, such as Oka Masao, Egami Namio and Hanihara Kazuo. Even though these studies received public attention, they were not part of the established theory in the Japanese academic world. Though Obayashi shows sympathy for their theory, it can be said that the similarity of myths was basically interpreted from the point of view of ‘cultural diffusion’ following the mainstream theory. By the way, Obayashi came to accept the theory on large scale immigration from the Korean peninsula after the 1990 "s, but he did never accept the theory that the Japanese emperor came from ancient Korea. The reason for this may be because of his own nationalism.
