The histories of interchange and trade of the Circum-Pan-North-East Asia have been studied according to countries. For example, the literature on Chinese-Japanese interchange and Chosun (Korean) - Japanese trade has documented a plethora of interesting findings, attracting focused attention and esteem from many scholars and associations that deal with the history of Japan and the history of Japanese economy.
From the main agents of trade and exchange and their places of activity over different periods in time, we can find that the histories of interchange and trade demonstrate a link or pattern. For instance, around 1870, a good example can be found in the relationship among the lord of Shanghai (the center of a coal market in North-East Asia), Nabegima Naohmasa (the lord of Saga), and Masuda Takasi (the first present of Mitsui & Co., Ltd.). Their relationship is good example of trade and exchange at that time.
Nabegima was the best in direct trading of Takasima coal, and Masuda also succeeded in direct trading with Shanghai for Miyati coal. Nabegima and Masuda were industrialists who thought that benefit to their country was obviously important, but what they wanted was to sell Takasima and Miyati coal to Shanghai which is a harbor city.
Since historical studies have shifted their focus on trade from land to ocean in the midst of globalism, historical analyses based on ocean or ocean historiography are thought to be more effective in examining historical events or changes. In this study, therefore, social and economic characteristics of Western Japan were investigated on the basis of human interaction between Kokuseiya and Itogozaemon who were born in Kyushu
