The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in the brain activation patterns during motor imagery and action observation of movement elements of Tuck Jump on the Horse Vault. Twelve male university students participated in the experiment as subjects. Subjects imaged and observed performance scenes of whole phase(from first phase to fourth phase), first phase(approach run-stepping on the springboard), second phase(first flight phase-touching on the horse vault), third phase(second flight phase), and fourth phase(landing) in the motor imagery and action observation condition respectively. While subjects were imagining and observing the performance scenes, electroencephalogram patterns were measured from the specific scalp area including F3, F4, C3, C4, P3, P4, O1, and O2, from which relative alpha powers were calculated. Analyses of data revealed that relative alpha power measured in motor imagery condition was higher in the whole phase than other phases, displaying increasing tendency during the whole phase compared to the resting state. During action observation, however, the relative alpha power showed significant decrease during observation of all movement phases compared to the resting state. These results suggest that action observation induces more changes in the activation of brain areas than motor imagery, and their effects on brain activity differs by the characteristics of the task being imaged or observed.
