The goal of this paper is to understand the aspects and meaning of the ambivalence appearing in narrative folk songs of the type ‘groom who dies by the curse of a maiden.’ This type of folk song consists of the determined courting by the maiden, a fearful curse, the groom's unexpected death when this curse is realized, and the reincarnation of the two as butterflies. This type of folk song has not received much attention to date because it has been considered similar in terms of plot to the classical novel Yangsanbaekjeon, the narrative shaman song Mungut, and various tales. Yet this folk tale breaks the mold seen in such conflicting dichotomies as love and hate, the angel image and the witch image, and masculinity and femininity, using the strategy of ambivalence to tear down those boundaries. Also, the fantastic conclusion of the folk song, which sees the two characters reborn as butterflies, shows that goal of this strategy of ambivalence is not simply to destroy conflicting values. That is, the ultimate goal of the strategy of ambivalence in this folk song is to find a new source of strength by dissolving the dichotomous framework. In thisregard, this folk song is not merely a ‘song of praise for a love that overcomes death,’ but a work that uses the strategy of ambivalence to give shape to the traditional women's perception of and methods for dealing with reality.
