The meaning of the word “scenery (fuukei)” has many uses in the Japanese language. “Yamasato Scenery” emphasizes visual panorama; “Renshu Scenery” shows ordinary human life; and “Kokoro Scenery” contains abstract and notional themes. More so, landscape also encompasses “residential landscape” and “landscape design” as objects of design and analysis. The word “scenery”-- especially when considered from the stance of nature, culture and people--has an appropriately wide range.
An important event of recent years is the dual exploration of the world of nature. One exploration examines the natural world according to the methodology of natural science, and the other examines nature as scenery. In the West, it has been said that modern man arose during the Puritan revolution in England. In this modern man who values individual freedom, the eye for viewing natural scenery was born.
An early expression along these lines began with Ruisdael, the 17th century Dutch painter. Before this time, nature was just a backdrop for religious portraiture. From this point, the abundance of nature became the main motif. Beginning with the poet Wordsworth, the philosopher John Ruskin, and English landscape painter John Turner, exploration of the European Alps and various other themes developed. And along with Humboldt's "physiognomic geography", an actual theory of scenery was formed.
During Japan's Edo period (1600-1865), the country was forcefully isolated from the rest of the world. Holland was the only foreign government allowed trading rights. Through the so called "Dutch Learning," western painting was imported along with techniques of perspective. The ukiyoe of the Edo period also has this influence. Ukiyoe can be broadly separated into "bijinga": the genres of female portraiture; and "fuukeiga": as scenery painting. Can it be said that the artists Hokusai and Hiroshige discovered the world of scenery in their wood block prints? "Meisyoe" are known for painting sites and places which were famous. The world of traditional Japanese poetry, (tanka and haiku) has exerted a strong influence upon these artists. Perhaps their scenery works relied on preconceptions perceived through poetry. It is said that discovery of scenery in Japan was not made until the Meiji period (1865-1912). In the environs of my university, the Inamino Plateau has more than 1000 reservoir ponds. The scenery of these ponds forms a unique terrestrial climate. Analyzing these, for the purpose of revitalizing the local scenery(fuukei), constitutes important and basic research. Using "green belt percentage" and "changes in water circumference" as key words, the techniques of measurement will be analyzed focusing upon the scenery of four ponds as models. In the past, reservoir ponds were built to prioritize functionality and technology. This practice must be changed to emphasize scenery. One of the keys for change may be the implementation of natural landscape architecture for scenery.
