The significance of Harunobu"s Beautiful Female Figure may be analyzed in the context of his production of numerous parody works using the contemporary style of the Edo period, which was influenced by Japanese classical authors, such as Waka and Youkyoku, as well as traditional Chinese subjects of art. In particular, this work of art was a satirical piece with a fabricated subject.
Although Harunobu learned from the paintings of Masanobu, who had worked in the mid-Edo period, his parody works have more artistic flair in term of his use of elegant atmospheres, his detailed depictions, and the manipulation of compact spaces. Moreover, his non-specific concentration on artistic works of parody reveals his openness to numerous possibilities, and his work may be separated in an outstanding class by itself.
The unique features of Harunobu"s works of parody are their unexpected character and his depiction of multi-layered images. Sacred and elegant subjects are often transformed into something more secular and real. Later on, his work greatly influenced many Ukiyo-e artists.
