Any critical review of 〈Winter Sonata〉, a KBS television drama series in recent years in lines of a cultural studies’ perspective calls for a more fundamental and sophisticated observation and analysis than a rather simplistic textual analysis of the drama content or a surface description of audiences’ response to the drama. It therefore would be quite essential to start a search for some specific historical contexts surrounding this particular spatial and temporal moment of Japanese society at which this television drama has been so liked and widely spread by at least a certain significant group of Japanese audience. This paper first of all briefly outlines the ‘legacies of the past’ and ‘cultural transactions’ between two countries and also between the peoples of both countries. Secondly, the paper is developed to an articulation of a theoretical concept, ‘subjectivity’ of the trans border audience. Then, thirdly, the paper more firmly concentrates upon the particular phenomenon of 〈Winter Sonata〉 boom in Japan, by following such headings as: the world of radical romanticism; women’s space genre and male protagonist; and the formation of a new subjectivity. By way of conclusion, the study provides some prospects for the short-term and long-term future relationships between the two countries, with a hope of diagnosing a possibility of an ideal Northeast Asian community beyond the territorial borders.
