The article is devoted to the analysis of the national cultural information expressed through idioms that reflect, save and transmit the national picture of the world as viewed by generations of a certain people. The analysis includes a number of idioms which have the word "eye" as a component both in the Russian and Korean languages.
The author makes an attempt to look at phraseological units drawn from seven explanatory Russian and Korean dictionaries. The aim of the analysis is to find language patterns through which certain variations of standard idioms are expressed. This will allow both to consider word-collocability and to compare cultural background knowledge carried by these phraseological units.
In Russian the word-component "eye" enters mainly predicative word-groups with the verb-components "отправить"(to send) "сослать"(to exile), "жить"(to live), "радоваться"(to be glad, to enjoy), "хватать"(to catch), "отдыхать"(to rest) and some others, while in Korean the word component "eye" collocate mainly with the predicatives... “거칠다”(unruly),“[까]뒤집다”(.to get upside down),“맞추다”.(coincide) etc.
According to associative and etymological dictionaries in the national cultural layer under consideration direct and indirect background knowledge the reflect national mentality, the idioms with the "eye" component include such cultural components as diamond, fire, personification of inanimate objects, a three-colored violet, a log, an ancient approximate(through an eye) measure system, French borrowed words and idioms dating back to 17-19 centuries as well as borrowings from old Greek.
In Korean idioms national cultural background information is expressed through such lingua-cultural components as fire, match, lightening, etc.
