The purpose of this paper is to investigate the syntactic and semantic properties of the depictive secondary predicates in English. Syntactically, the depictive construction partakes in two syntactic relationships of adjunction and predication, and semantically, it functions as a participant-oriented adjunct. This paper reviews the syntactic properties of English depictives in terms of their syntactic categories, word order and scope of negation and also various proposals regarding their syntactic structure. It also compares depictives with other types of participant-oriented adjuncts; oriented manner adverbs (agentive, transparent, and resultative manner adverbs) and free adjuncts, and argues that orientation towards a participant is a key feature shared by oriented adverbs and secondary predicates, though there are subtle semantic differences between them.
