Depictive predication is impossible in the so-called periphrastic existential sentences except that a verbal element follows the postverbal DP. Arimoto (1991) tries to solve this contrast relying on two unrelated stipulations. Rejecting Arimoto's analysis, this paper proposes that this contrast can be accounted for on the basis of the following two major assumptions. First, as argued in Stowell (1978, 1981) and many others, be is a raising verb and it takes a small clause as its complement. Second, the attachment site of depictives is confined to v' and V' due to their inherent semantic properties. Under these assumptions, the contrast in question simply reduces to whether or not a proper attachment site for a depictive is available in the small clause.
