This study aims to look for a deeper generalization of the syntactic constraints on movement and ellipsis of XP whose head is removed. This study also tries to account for the constraints in terms of the contextual definition of phase (den Dikken 2007 and Bo?kovi? (2012a, 2012b, among others). Focusing on English data from a cross-categorial perspective, this paper argues that this is due to the ban on X-stranding and that X-stranding, in turn, is derived by cooperation of a revised version of Phase Impenetrability Condition (PIC), EPIC (Extended PIC), and Anti-locality.
