In this paper we discussed the patterns, the semantics, and the arguments of English resultative constructions. This paper can be summarized briefly as follows:
First, the patterns of English resultative constructions are differently classified depending on what kinds of criteria we apply. It seems to be desirable that we apply syntactic and semantic properties combined as criteria rather than syntactic or semantic properties alone.
Second, it seems that we can explain the meanings of English resultative constructions by using the relations between the verbal subevents and the constructional subevents.
Third, it appears that all of the acceptable classes of English resultative constructions observe the conditions of full argument realization and semantic coherence.
Fourth, many English resultative constructions observe Direct Object Restriction, but not all of them observe it.
In conclusion, all the English resultative constructions have various kinds of syntactic and semantic properties. They share some of the properties, but some of them have different properties. Therefore, they can be classified into various patterns. So it is thought to be desirable that we deal with English resultatives as various patterns which belong to one family rather than only one pattern.
