The main purpose of this paper is to explore the common properties of various triggers in licensing negative polarity items (NPIs). From a pragmatic perspective sentences and utterances communicate a set of assumptions. Certain aspects of the speaker's beliefs provide evidence for the licensing phenomena of NPIs. We propose that particular types of assumptions ('explicature' to use a relevance-theoretic term) play a major role in licensing NPIs. This explicature-based analysis can deal with certain cases such as the occurrences of NPIs in subpropositional sentences and some metalinguistic negations which a veridicality-based analysis (Giannakidou 1998, 1999) cannot.
