This paper is to explore NPIs which denote an idiomatic minimum from a grammaticalization perspective. The NPIs examined here are the class of expressions with NPI-status that contains an indefinite NP. Each of these NPIs is not arbitrarily distributed over the lexicon but clustering in certain semantic domains. Meaning is a crucial factor in the grammaticalization of lexical items. The grammaticalization of lexical items which develop into NPIs is to be discussed panchronically in terms of some principles and mechanisms including unidirectionality, pragmatic inference and source determination. Such principles and mechanisms considered from the diachronic and synchronic perspective provide a clue as to how human cognition and pragmatic use of language interact. This shows that the framework of grammaticalization offers a powerful tool for explaining the question of how lexical items get a special position in the grammar of a language.
