This paper is concerned with the meanings and implicatures of the conditional constructions in Korean. Building on Mittwoch, Huddleston, and Collins’s (2001) pioneering work on the semantics and pragmatics of English conditional constructions, I will first show that the corresponding Korean conditional constructions have the same semantic meanings and the same range of pragmatic usages. I will then argue that the division of labor between semantics and pragmatics helps solve some long-standing questions about the Korean conditional constructions. I will finally discuss the distribution of weak negative polarity items (NPIs) in conditional constructions of both languages and conclude that these NPIs are licensed not only at the level of semantics but also at the level of pragmatic use, in favor of Linebarger’s (1987) approach.
