This paper aims to analyze voicing agreement in English morphological operations with a functionalist approach. The seemingly atypical direction of assimilation of English words has its motivation in the morphological asymmetry between bases and affixes. The prominence of the bases or roots above affixes has been proved by various psycholinguistic experiments related to recognition and a large number of phonological phenomena including differentiated phonemic inventory and asymmetric stress system. The analysis is carried out on the principle of economy, that is, minimization of articulatory efforts and maximization of perception. This paper provides the constraints with phonetic and psycholinguistic motivations to overcome the limits of the constraints that have been used in OT framework. GESTURE OVERLAP, PERCEPT MAX (WD) with several other constraints based on the principle of economy explain the direction of voicing assimilation in English and predict the optimal output.
