This study aims to explore the bracketing or the morphological parsing of [A-N-N] sequences. Under the assumption that phrases can appear inside compound words and that bracketing can be dissociated from interpretation itself, an [A-N-N] sequence can be parsed into [[A-N]N-N]N, [[A-N]NP-N]N, or [A-[N-N]N]NP based on the [A-N] frequency. Crucially, cliches, institutionalized expressions, even though they are phrases, score higher in frequency than on-the-spot phrases, which implies a compound bracketing of cliches. This study is another attempt to show that a formal approach cannot be the full story and that a more usage-based approach may shed some light on some puzzling problems in morphology.
