A. P. Chekhov's work 『Steppe』(1888) is his first short novel. Since he used to write short stories. he had some difficulties in writing this novel. The reason. in part. why he is suffering from writing this novel is the amount of work he has done for this novel. Chekhov wrote 'Story of Journey' in order to give an unity in this novel. However. this work is not the only simple tripaccount. This is an initiatory novel. which describes the way of a boy's life. The boy is growing quitely through principles of universe and meeting with various people.
In this article. Chekhov intends to express a boy's organized maturity in the shape of initiation which is expressed in the nature. It proves that Chekhov delineated folkloristic elements by showing and using the symbols of initiation. The symbols frequently appeare in the myth and folktale.
In addition to initiation. the description of nature occupies almost every part of the 『Steppe』. It shows Egorushka's viewpoint which is not only unmatured and naive. but philosophic, speculative and poetic. In this novel the speaker. who has been following Egorushka's viewpoint. expresses his own emotion and opinion. As a result. we can see relationship between the folk lylic song and Chekhov's works. This steppe plays an important role for the spiritual maturity of Egorushka by describing the point that steppe preserves a truth of nature and a life.
Using these folkloristic elements. Chekhov understood deeply Russian people and created his own characteristic that is different from other writers.
