The Black Death which had repeated and continued for hundreds years since the mid 14th century offered a clue for understanding the formation of "modem men" in the transition to the modem age. 1his study looks at the medical and scientific cognition of and attitudes toward the cause, prevention, and treatment of the Black Death by doctors in the end of the Middle Ages through an analysis of plague tractates.
The plague tractates primarily aimed to explain the cause and preventive measures for the Black Death to people of the times based on the Greek and Islamic medicine, and were highly focused on the education of the reasonable and secure lifestyle rather than medical treatment. In particular, there have been frequent expressions emphasizing an empirical thinking in the tractates gradually since the later 14th century, which demonstrates that doctors of the times were able to be prepared with a "modem" cognitive attitude that values observations and experiences while going through the Black Death. Some doctors could restore their confidence in the treatment of epidemic in the period of the Black Death because they had been able to accumulate clinical experiences through the repetitive incurrence of the Black Death at a regular interval.
Modem medicine did not appear from the disconnection with the Middle Ages, but 'was made available through "the long 15th century(l348~1500" of medical history since the Black Death. Amid the overcoming of the shock of the irresistible Black Death, there appeared a grown modem perception and the change of attitude.
