This paper aims to explore the female space of resistance as a heterotopia, by focusing on the interplay of contradicting ideologies and power relations within Arlene's life-spaces such as family, school, prison and apartment in Marsha Norman's Getting Out. Drawing on Foucault, the paper looks into the dualistic opposition between patriarchal division of space and 'other' space or space of 'other', as well as Arlene's attempts to transform the patriarchal space into a new 'other' space. Her 'other' space functions as a Foucauldian heterotopia in that it retains the possibility of initiating the flow of escape which is embodied in the interstices of power relations and dominant patriarchal structures. The 'otherness' of the female space is evident in the ways her space interacts with the patriarchal 'surround' by challenging it, contesting it, and negating it. Through an analysis of the complexity of different spatial relations within the patriarchally systemized social context, this paper bring to the fore the ways Arlene resists the division of space in her attempt to shape her 'other' life and invents new ways of existing as a nomadic subject.
