URIMAWEUL : The Korean Language and Literature 29, 191-212, This study examines the real background facts and its practical aspect of temple-space expressed in classical novels. The temple-space in classical novels is a Utopian space that has two sides of religious sentiment of Buddhism and Taoism, and this space is used in various background settings.
First, the temple-space of classical novels is used in the desire-space that actualizes a character's wish. Second, this temple-space is also used in the deliverance-space that relieves a character in Jhe misfortune of crisis. Third, this is a meeting space in which characters meet each other dramatically. Lastly, this space is used in the achievement-space in which characters obtain power.
Thus, the temple-space is one of main background-settings of classical novels, and the concern about this space should be continued. (Chunagnam National University)
