The concept of heterotopia, which Michel Foucault first conceived in 1966-67, has become, after his death, an object of various studies and applications in the fields of geography, urbanism, architecture, cultural studies, and aesthetics among others. Nonetheless, the explosive interests in and debates on heterotopia are grounded on much confusion and ambiguity on its notion. Thus, this article aims to elicit the notion of heterotopia in Foucault's texts by placing it within the early literary critiques of Foucault, the crucial text to understand his philosophical endeavors and problematics afterward. From the perspective of its literary origin, the author argues that heterotopia is a 'absolutely different' space from the rest of social space, constituted by the experiences of transgression which literary thinking fosters. This study opens the way for an aesthetic interpretation of heterotopia which Jacques Rancière develops further into a central subject of his aesthetic studies.
