Caricature is a drawing of the objects that exaggerates the characteristic of their appearance in a humorous or critical way. Most of designers figure out the characteristic of the object and decide the ratio of the form change to exaggerate or the part to omit in caricature by their subjective intuition. However, it is needed to find possible image transforming logics among numerous ways to develop caricature generating software in this study. In this study, we aimed to suggest some image transformation fundamentals and logics that can be used in the software to transform a vector image into a caricature.
This study analyzed problems of the previous caricature-related researches and then suggested eight fundamentals of caricature generation in accordance with the three processes of making a caricature. For a process to exaggerate or simplify the overall structure, we suggested emotional geometry form, axis of symmetry and essence ratio. For a process to transform the partial structure, we suggested omission for repeated shape. Finally, for a process to transform the object detail, we suggested unexpected shape, big size for detailed shape, basic geometry form for small shape, and abnormal slope. These eight fundamentals to generate caricature can be used independently or coincidently in the software. The findings of this research will save the expense and shorten the period to make a caricature typed graphic information in the fields of animations, games, 3D digital maps, multimedia products for education, and cyber avatars.
